Our work

We combine emergency response with long-term development, integrating our work based on the needs of each community.

Thematic areas

Eight areas of work, one goal

Community stakeholders holding a Women's Voice and Leadership programme banner

01

Women leadership and governance

We provide targeted training in governance and leadership so women can take active, decision-making roles within their communities and civil society. We champion the 35% affirmative action for women stipulated in the South Sudan constitution, and use civic education to help women, youth and persons with disabilities take part in democratic processes, constitution-making and elections.

02

Peacebuilding and social cohesion

We promote democratic principles and access to justice, raise awareness of human rights, and build community capacity for conflict resolution, mediation and reconciliation. Through the Women, Peace and Security agenda, community dialogues and peace committee training, we work to transform conflict into equitable, sustainable peace.

03

Education and capacity development

We support technical and vocational education and training, girl- and boy-child education, and the training of education service providers. We give adolescent girls who have dropped out of school life skills, build the capacity of primary school teachers, and support adult literacy.

04

Economic empowerment and livelihoods

We enhance productivity, earnings and involvement in sustainable livelihoods for extremely vulnerable women, girls and boys: those facing poverty, homelessness, single parenthood or rural isolation, survivors of violence, internally displaced people and returnees, and persons with disabilities.

05

Protection (GBV, child protection, PSEA)

We build the capacity of community-based actors with survivor-centred, culturally sensitive prevention and response to sexual and gender-based violence, and strengthen referral pathways to legal, psychosocial and safe-home services. With grassroots women-led organizations we work to prevent the recruitment and use of child soldiers, document grave abuses against children, and advocate for stronger child protection laws.

06

Health and reproductive rights

Lack of access to healthcare is one of the underlying factors that leaves women and children exposed to violence and poverty. We advocate for the health and reproductive rights of women and girls, as part of putting their needs upfront.

07

Gender equality and women's rights

SWIGO was formed by women activists to reduce the gender gap at all levels of society. Our Women's and Girls' Rights Upfront approach seeks to raise women's and girls' well-being higher on the peace and security agenda, and to ensure they take part in the processes that shape their future.

08

Climate change and environmental sustainability

We offer education based on climate information and research the relationship between climate and food security. We build the skills of local farmers and communities in climate-smart agriculture, reinforce local adaptation, and promote community-driven strategies for climate adaptation and mitigation.
